Photoroom or Remove.bg: Which AI background removal tool is right for you?

Nearly all AI background removers feel the same. I mean, they might operate with different models, but the process is pretty similar: Upload an image and the tool removes the background.

But the two popular options you'll often see when searching for background removers are Photoroom and Remove.bg. And while both platforms are synonymous with background removal, they differ quite a lot in their structures, features, and the level of support they provide.

I recently explored both platforms, so let's look at what sets the background remover tools in Photoroom vs. Remove.bg apart—and most importantly, which AI background remover tool is right for you.

Photoroom vs. Remove.bg comparison overview

Photoroom is a complete photo editing platform that enables you to create polished images by removing the background of an image, generating new ones, and applying various effects. It’s best for both background removal and simplifying other complex photo editing tasks like creating image backgrounds, enhancing image quality, making marketing assets, and so much more.

Remove.bg is a web-based tool primarily focused on erasing backgrounds from images, enabling you to obtain transparent or customized backgrounds for photos. It’s best for one-off background removal tasks.

Both tools are powered by advanced AI technology, which automates the background removal process. However, they have different pricing, integrations, support strength, editing features, accuracy levels, and batch processing features.

Primary users of Photoroom and RemoveBG

There isn’t much difference between Photoroom and RemoveBG’s users. Both have similar users, like designers, photographers, and creators. But Photoroom is designed for businesses.

As I mentioned earlier, the background removal feature is only one tool in Photoroom. The platform provides several other tools that help businesses upgrade their creative workflow.

Here's everything worth knowing about each platform’s audience.

Who is Photoroom for?

Photoroom homepage with a tagline, phone displaying an edited image, and start options. All businesses, from solopreneurs to large organizations, use the Photoroom background remover. It’s designed for small business owners and enterprises, as well as content creators, marketers, and professional photographers who want to create professional-looking images for websites, online stores, and advertisements.

  • Industry relevance: Fields that require high-quality visuals quickly, such as social media marketing, brand visual design, and e-commerce for platforms like Shopify and Instagram.

  • Skill level required: Beginner to professional. Photoroom has an intuitive interface, making it accessible to users of all skill levels.

Who is Remove.bg for?

While business owners—particularly e-commerce managers—also use RemoveBG, designers, everyday individuals, web developers, and corporate professionals use the tool to remove the background from images for profile pictures, business cards,  social media posts, and websites.

  • Industry relevance: E-commerce platforms, real estate, and corporate settings where clean images are essential for product catalogs, ID cards, or professional profiles.

  • Skill level required: Beginner to professional. The tool provides a straightforward approach to background removal without manual editing.

Pricing plans for Photoroom and RemoveBG

Both platforms have different pricing structures. While Photoroom offers free and monthly plans with no capped usage, Remove.bg offers credit-based free and subscription plans. Choosing a plan in either tool will depend on your budget and how you plan to use the tools.

Here’s a breakdown of pricing on both platforms.

How much does Photoroom cost?

  • Forever free plan: Free background removal on the web platform and mobile apps. You can download up to 250 background-free images without watermarks. You can also share designs with teammates and use customizable templates, the text feature, a tool that lets you remove unwanted objects from images, and other free features.

  • Pro plan: Costs $4.99/week, $12.99/month, or $89.99/year with a free trial. You get unrestricted access to all AI image editing tools on the platform, including the batch background removal feature.

  • Team plan: Same pricing and features as the Pro plan, plus you can add two more team members and enjoy Pro features for the price of one.

  • Enterprise: For custom needs or if you're processing 100,000+ images. This requires contacting the Photoroom sales team.

How much does Remove.bg cost?

To understand RemoveBG’s pricing, you first need to understand how credits work.

Credits are like tokens. You use these tokens to pay for removing backgrounds, specifically if you want high-resolution results. One credit gives you one high-quality image.

  • Free plan: Offers one free credit to download high-resolution images on the website (it costs ¼ credit if you use their apps or plugins). You can still use the tool on the web afterward, but you’ll only get low-resolution images. You also get 50 free API previews per month.

  • Pay as you go: Starts from $1.99 for one credit. Credits are valid for up to two years after purchase, so you can use them whenever you need.

  • Subscription plan: Starts from $9/month for 40 credits (non-commercial use) and $39/month for 200 credits (commercial use). Unused credits roll over as long as you keep your subscription.

  • High-volume solutions: For 100,000+ images/year. This requires contacting the RemoveBG sales team.

RemoveBG payment methods Credit card, PayPal, and Apple Pay.

How do you choose the right background remover based on pricing?

Choose based on your budget, how often you'll use the tool, and whether the extra features or flexibility align with your workflow.

  • Estimate your usage. If you need unlimited background removals or want to avoid worrying about credits, Photoroom's Pro or Team plans may suit you better and might be more economical than Remove.bg’s credit-based subscriptions.

  • Consider how much flexibility you want. Remove.bg’s Pay as you go plan offers flexibility without a subscription, making it ideal if you’re a sporadic user. Photoroom's plans are better if you prefer a fixed monthly or annual fee with full access.

  • Consider what else you need beyond background removal. Photoroom includes AI tools like AI Upscale and a selection of templates in its offer, which can save you thousands of dollars in editing fees if these features are essential to your work.

How accessible are both background removal platforms?

When it comes to accessing these background removers, you can use either tool on a web browser or mobile app, although RemoveBG doesn’t have an iOS mobile app. But Photoroom offers more accessibility options and entry points, and that’s because there are other ways to measure accessibility beyond app and web usage. Here's what you need to know.

For starters, you can immediately access the background remover tools for both platforms on any modern web browser.

On the other end, here are the most important factors that affect a tool’s ease of access, and how both platforms stack up against each other.

How do you choose the right background remover based on accessibility?

  • Consider the devices you use most. If you need a tool that works across a wide range of devices, including iOS and Android, Photoroom might be the better choice since it’s available on more platforms. But if you want a desktop app, then RemoveBG might be a better fit.

  • Consider the supported file formats. Photoroom supports more input and output formats than RemoveBG, which might be important if you work with various file types.

  • If inputting high-detail images matters to your workflow, RemoveBG supports higher image dimension limits on the paid plans, making it suitable for massive projects.

  • For ongoing projects, Photoroom's built-in project storage can save you time by keeping designs accessible for future use, while RemoveBG lacks this feature.

Which platform is easier to use: Photoroom or RemoveBG?

Honestly, the background eraser in either platform is super easy to use. You don’t have to be a professional designer or photographer to get the best from either tool. You’ll only notice subtle differences in their user interfaces, navigation, and workflow, and I’ll share more about these here.

User interface

With its icon-based interface and single-panel editor (web), Photoroom is designed with user-friendliness in mind. It has an intuitive interface that makes it easy to navigate.

Remove.bg is also an efficient and user-friendly platform, with a straightforward interface that makes background removal simple.

Here’s what their mobile apps look like:

Remove.bg and Photoroom mobile interfaces showing editing tools and background options.

Learning curve

Both Photoroom and RemoveBG cater to creatives of all skill levels. So, you can achieve great results without extensive training or prior experience.

Here are the overall steps when using either platform:

  1. Open the app (web or mobile).

  2. Select the background remover tool.

  3. Upload your image, and the tool will automatically erase the background.

  4. Download your transparent image.

The tools allow you to erase or restore parts of the image that weren’t handled automatically.

After removing a background, you can add a white background, blue background, other solid background colors, or new background images using either platform. Photoroom even comes with a background library—a collection of pre-made image backgrounds that you can choose from.

What’s the background removal speed on both platforms?

Both Photoroom and RemoveBG are optimized for fast processing, which is great because the whole point of using an AI background remover is to save valuable time anyway. But I’ve also noticed that speed can vary on either platform depending on your device, the picture’s complexity, and how many images you’re processing. Here’s how fast Photoroom and RemoveBG operate for single images and when processing images in bulk.

Single image processing

After testing both tools on their web and mobile apps, I found that there isn’t much difference in speed when removing background from single images.

From the point of uploading to the final result, each tool removes an image background within 5 to 10 seconds, depending on the picture’s complexity and your internet connection speed.

You can test the speed for both tools on their web versions (Photoroom and RemoveBG). I recommend using the stopwatch on your phone as a timer.

Batch image processing

When it comes to removing background in batches on either platform, the speed varies depending on certain factors like the batch size and server load. But both tools are optimized to handle multiple images. Photoroom alone operates 10 times faster than manual editing, making it easy for any creator or business to streamline their editing workflow. It’s no surprise then that entrepreneurs save up to 10 hours a week using the platform in general.

I’ll share more on batch background removal in the coming sections.

Which background removal tool gives the most accurate results?

I’ll tell you for free that the background removers in Photoroom and RemoveBG are excellent at erasing backgrounds in simple images—images that have only one or two subjects, plain or not-so-busy backgrounds, or barely to no intricate details like hair.

But when it comes to complex images, I find that Photoroom delivers more consistently than RemoveBG. The best way to understand this is to look at three areas worth considering when assessing the accuracy level of any background remover: the ability to handle fine details, the ability to handle complex images, and the consistency of the results they produce.

Let’s examine these three areas more closely. To give a fair assessment, I used the free versions of both tools for all the examples below.

How Photoroom and RemoveBG handle fine details

Put simply: it depends on the depth of detail.

As you can tell from the image below, both tools perform similarly on details like hair and fringes, which is a big positive because most background removers struggle to erase background from hair. I used a super complicated image for this example to show you that you’ll get even better results if the details in your image aren’t this tricky.

Photo of a woman in a fringe outfit with backgrounds removed by Photoroom and Remove.bg.

But they are vastly different when processing images with even more intricate details like shadow. I found that Photoroom does a better job of differentiating between background elements like shadows and the main subject of an image.

Here’s an image I processed using both tools. You’ll notice that RemoveBG retained shadows of the glasses, which makes the cutout look shabby. The glasses will look rather odd when added to a product catalogue, social media content design, or creative material for ads. I’m still impressed by how Photoroom carved out the cups so perfectly.

Photo of glass cups with shadows, backgrounds removed by Photoroom and Remove.bg tools.

How Photoroom and RemoveBG handle complex backgrounds

Both tools are quite good at separating image subjects from backgrounds with lots of details, colors, or objects in the scene. But I did notice a slight difference between them when it comes to handling cluttered backgrounds.

Let’s say you own a brick-and-mortar clothing store. You’ve taken a picture like the one below to showcase your product on marketplaces like Etsy, but you notice that it has a cluttered background that can distract customers from the main outfit.

Mannequin in a boutique, framed by open blue doors, with someone adjusting its dress.

Here’s what you get when you use either tool to remove the image background. The results are great, but you can see that, unlike Photoroom, RemoveBG didn’t erase part of the hand touching the outfit in the original image. This was a common thread I noticed with other complex images I tested.

Boutique photo with mannequin background removed by Photoroom and Remove.bg.

But it’s also worth noting that both background removers might not work well for images with overlapping objects. For instance, the lady in the image below has water splashing over her legs.

I ran it through both tools and found that they couldn’t tell the water apart from her skin, which makes sense because background removal algorithms rely on contrast and clear edges to separate objects, and transparent or overlapping elements like water don’t provide enough distinction.

Beach photo of a woman running with water splashes, backgrounds removed by both tools.

So, I recommend keeping objects off your subjects while photographing an item, or use a retouch tool to remove them before tackling the background—it won’t work for all objects, like water, but it’s worth a shot.

Overall, the background remover in Photoroom is more consistent than RemoveBG’s.

From my experience using both tools, Photoroom's background remover consistently produces transparent backgrounds better than RemoveBG.

Take, for instance, this image of a jar with shadows. When I first processed it with RemoveBG, the tool gave me this image:

Glass jug and berries photo, background removed by Remove.bg, retaining shadows.

I had to try it four times before getting a result that matches Photoroom’s.

Glass jug photo compared between Photoroom and Remove.bg, showing shadow differences. Also, the free version of Remove.bg reduces image quality, which restricts how much you can do with your transparent images. You might have already noticed this from the examples above, but here’s a closer look at what I mean:

Portrait of a woman in a black hat, background removed by Photoroom and Remove.bg.

“The background removal [in Photoroom] is fantastic. I think it’s the best in the industry right now because I’ve used a lot and none can compare to what Photoroom can do. For someone with over a decade of experience managing creative content, this feature stands out as industry-grade.” - Saad Basir, Founder, Watches, Inc.

How to choose the right tool for you based on the accuracy of results

  • Think about how often you work with intricate details. Photoroom handles complex details and intricate textures more consistently than RemoveBG.

  • Decide how much trial and error you can tolerate. RemoveBG may require multiple attempts to get the perfect cutout, especially for detailed images, while Photoroom often delivers on the first try without additional edits. But if you don’t care about high precision or want to test multiple adjustments to get the desired result, then you can try RemoveBG.

  • Consider the output quality you want. Photoroom's free version gives you higher-quality output compared to the reduced quality in RemoveBG’s free version.

  • Save time by matching the tool to your needs. If you prioritize consistency and fewer retries, Photoroom is likely a more excellent option for a seamless background removal workflow.

What are the additional features on both background removal platforms?

Photoroom and Remove.bg have impressive image background removal tools, but they offer distinct additional features that cater to various editing needs. Both platforms provide batch background removal on different channels. They offer integrations to different services. And Photoroom comes equipped with a more robust list of editing features.

Here’s more about batch removal, API and integrations, and additional image editing features on both platforms.

Batch processing

Both platforms offer batch processing.

In Photoroom, you can batch remove backgrounds using the web editor or the iOS and Android apps. The platform allows you to edit 50 or more images at once, depending on your chosen paid plan.

In RemoveBG, you can only remove backgrounds from photos in bulk using the API, and there’s no explicit limit on the number of images per batch.

Both Photoroom and RemoveBG can batch-process up to 500 images per minute with their APIs.

Integrations and API

Both Photoroom and RemoveBG make it easy to integrate convenient background removal services into your everyday tools, whether you’re a developer automating workflows or a non-tech-savvy user looking for simple tools. Their APIs allow businesses to bring automated image processing directly into their apps or websites, saving you hours of manual edits.

If you’re not a developer but still want smooth automation, Photoroom provides code-free integrations. It works with tools like Zapier, Figma, Airtable, WordPress, and more—perfect for any creative teams working on massive campaigns and marketers who want to get things done without writing a single line of code.

API results

When it comes to accuracy, Photoroom takes the front-row seat. A 2023 evaluation by Velebit AI found that Photoroom's API scored an impressive 70.8% accuracy, way higher than RemoveBG’s 41.7% accuracy score. If your work involves detailed or complex images—think hair, fur, or intricate patterns—Photoroom is more likely to give you the results you need without extra touch-ups.

API pricing

Both Photoroom's API vs. Remove.bg use different pricing models. RemoveBG’s API pricing is part of its broad pricing plan, while Photoroom's API pricing plan starts at $20/month for 1,000 images.

While RemoveBG only offers an API for background removal, Photoroom also has an API for image editing, which allows you to add realistic shadows, image backgrounds, and more. Photoroom also offers a money-back guarantee for its API, allowing you to only pay for images that meet your expectations.

It's easy to see why. AI editing tools provide several benefits. They help save valuable time, reduce costs, and ultimately drive sales growth.

While RemoveBG covers essentials like edge refinement and background replacement, Photoroom goes further, offering a full toolkit of AI-powered tools with advanced editing capabilities that can transform your photo editing workflow. • Consider your work with Adobe Photoshop. RemoveBG integrates with Photoshop, which might make it a great addition to your existing workflow.

  • Evaluate your need for advanced API features. Photoroom's API supports not just background removal but also tasks like generating image backgrounds and resizing for different platforms, making it ideal if you need a more comprehensive editing solution through automation.

  • Assess your editing needs beyond background removal. Photoroom provides extra tools like AI backgrounds, shadows, upscaling, and retouching, while RemoveBG focuses mainly on background removal.

Is team collaboration available on either platform?

If you're tired of long email threads or juggling different apps to get a design approved, then you’ll appreciate using Photoroom.

RemoveBG doesn't offer tools for team collaboration, but Photoroom is built with teamwork in mind. You can work directly with your team on designs by leaving comments or making edits right away on the design platform.

Photoroom Teams page showing team collaboration tools and examples of product edits.

For example, on the Team plan, you can share your subscription with two teammates at no additional cost. This means a designer, social media manager, and project lead could all work within the same workspace, removing the need for extra subscriptions or constant file transfers.

Even the Free plan has collaboration options: you can share your designs with teammates for feedback. They’ll need their own Photoroom accounts to participate, but this still makes it easy to centralize project conversations in one place.

Photoroom also supports collaboration across the web and mobile devices. If you’re working on a desktop, you can easily share progress with a team member reviewing designs on their phone. This flexibility makes it easy to work on the go, collaborate in an organized way, and never miss important updates on projects.

Do Photoroom and RemoveBG provide community and support?

When it comes to community, Photoroom is more community-centered, while RemoveBG is more dev-centered. And when it comes to support, both platforms offer different communication options and you’ll find tons of tutorials on their blogs and help centers. Photoroom even provides video tutorials on its YouTube channel.

Here’s everything you need to know about the platforms’ communities and support.

User communities

There's something truly special about connecting with others who share your interests, especially when it comes to creative work like photo editing.

Available tutorials

It’s a lot easier to use new tools when you have the right resources at your disposal.

On the other end, Remove.bg provides a help center and blog loaded with informative guides that walk you through different aspects of their tool.

Photoroom vs. Remove.bg: Which should you choose?

Ashleigh Patten, Founder of Thrift with Ash, put it best when she said, “There are so many apps out there that claim to do amazing things, but it’s hard to know what’s really worth your money and your time.”

Photoroom and RemoveBG offer really strong background removal tools. And while they have some overlapping similarities, they're distinct and useful in their own ways.

If you're looking for a platform that goes beyond background removal to serve as an image editing stack, Photoroom is hard to beat, especially for marketing and product photos. On the other hand, if you want to focus only on background removal and don’t mind a tool that reduces the  quality of your image on the free plan, then go for Remove.bg.

If you do decide on Photoroom like Ashleigh did, then yay! You can use it on the Web or your smartphone (Android or iOS). And if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Sales team. There’s always someone available to help.
